The Moon Room - Sibley House
The Elevation of the Moon by the Acolytes of Didamel
Oil on gesso prepared ceiling with 12Karat White Gold Leaf
6' x 12'
My first ever ceiling painting, this project spanned parts of 2020 and 2021. It was commissioned by a couple who have traveled the world extensively and collected art every step of the way.
From the inception of the project, it was known that there would be at least one other ceiling painting in the formal dining room adjacent and as such the themes of both ceilings would compliment each other. After much consultation with the patrons, sketches, and conceptualization it was decided that the overarching theme would be the passage of time as expressed in various motifs, particularly night and day (hence the Moon and Sun rooms), but also with references to the lunar cycle, months, and seasons.
The central theme is ultimately that cherishing beauty and family is paramount, especially in the inexorable passing of time. The symbolism, including the angelic acolytes, the presence of the demi goddess Didamel’s moon motif, halos, as well as art nouveau inspired decorative elements are all taken directly from work on my book project, The Shael Ovalis.
